Research Data Management

Data Organisation effective data manipulation involves structuring files, documenting the research process, and metadata.

File structuring requires creating a project folder and individual sub-pages with publication sources, statistical (experimental) data, research results (program code, data analysis tables, work text), and a README file.

Documentation of metadata, data analysis, and transformation methodology provides an understanding of data and research process by all stakeholders.

Metadata information about the original data – describes the data and helps them to classify, organize and characterize. The key elements of metadata are the definition and designation of indicators, units of their measurement, a brief description of the assessment methodology and data sources.

File names should be unique, informative, not very long. It is advisable to use a standardized form for different versions of documents.

Recommended items for file names:

➠  name of the project or the name of the researcher

➠  job type or date of file creation (YYYYMMDD)

➠  a version of the document (example: V1, V1_2, V2)

➠  use of characters from sets A-Z, a-z, 0-9, hyphen, underscore and dot

Examples: MultivariteAnalysis_Part2_20190221.docx, Protsiuk_Thesis_V1.pdf, UkrStat _2000-2019.xlsx

Use the following data formats:

➠  Data Tables – CSV instead XLSX

➠  Text Data – TXT or PDF instead of DOC

➠  Databases – XML or SQLITE instead of MDB, DBF, SQL

➠  Visual – PDF, TIFF, JPEG2000, MPEG-4, WAVE, AIFF

 

 

Data Storage

Backing up information is used to store data and play it back in case of damage.

 

Custom programs for project management and file versions: GIT: GitHub, GitLab, BitBucket, Trello.

Platforms for storing and sharing files: Open Science Framework, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box.

Data Access refers to a user's ability to access or retrieve data stored within a database or other repository. Users who have data access can store, retrieve, move or manipulate stored data, which can be stored on a wide range of hard drives and external devices.

For the organization of sharing, unlimited or partial use of data, you can use open licenses Creative Commons. Users are able to freely use digital content with the consent of authors and other copyright owners.

Alpha Vantage is a leading provider of free APIs for real-time and historical data on stocks, forex (FX), and digital / cryptocurrencies.

Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE) is search data and scientific information.

Google Dataset Search is a Google search service.

Google Data Studio is a service allows you to visualize and interactively explore data on dashboards or reports, easily share and publish information from different systems (Adwords, BigQuery, Google Analytics, Google Sheets), design them into visual charts, tables, charts and observe changes in real time.

Google Public Data is a service has data sets from the World Bank, IMF, Eurostat, etc. Public data provides global statistics on the environment, economy, labor, health, education, poverty, etc.

Google Trends is a public application is based on Google search, which shows how often a certain term is searched for in relation to the total volume of search queries in different regions of the world and in different languages.

IFIs projects is an official state portal with a register of projects of social and economic development of Ukraine, which are implemented with the involvement of funds of international financial organizations.

Internet Live Stats a monitor's internet usage statistics (number of websites, emails sent, active social media users).

Kaggle is an online community of data scientists and machine learners, owned by Google LLC.

KDnuggets is the largest data mining portal.

Knoema is a global data source that allows users to find, visualize, model, and present their own and global data to facilitate decision-making.

Open Budget is a state web portal "Budget for Citizens" with open data on public finances: state and local budgets. Here, you can use the BOOST tool to analyze budget metrics.

Open Data Impact Map a public database of organizations that use open government data around the world.

Re3data.org is a registry of research data repositories. 

Spending is an official information resource with open data on the use of budget funds in Ukraine and the largest database on public finances of Ukraine.

Statista a portal to search the various statistical databases of the world.
